Surgery

Are you feeling apprehensive about your pet’s upcoming surgery?

Bringing a family member in for an operation is never easy. At Sibley Animal Hospital, we understand exactly what you’re going through because we’re pet owners too. Rest assured that we’ll do everything within our power to ensure that your pet’s procedure is as stress-free as possible.

Pre-Surgical Care

The surgical care at Sibley Animal Hospital begins with thorough preoperative screening. This helps us to reduce the risk of complications for your pet. We’ll also develop a safe and effective plan to keep your pet comfortable and pain-free – before, during and following surgery. We do not provide recovery collars (e-collars), so please have your pet fitted for one at a pet store one week prior to scheduled surgery.

Surgery

Whether routine or complex, your pet’s procedure will be our top priority. From the moment you arrive, we’ll be there to ease your mind, answer your questions and keep your pet calm and relaxed.

Once safely sedated, our team will complete the surgery as efficiently as possible. As the doctor works, our experienced support staff will be present at all times, assisting with surgery and closely monitoring your companion’s wellbeing.

We perform all routine surgeries and other soft tissue procedures to include spays and neuters, dental cleanings under anesthesia (with and without surgical tooth extractions) and declaws. For additional information on some of our procedures, please visit the informative links below:

After Care

After surgery, we’ll gently relocate your pet to our quiet, comfortable recovery area, where our staff will continue to monitor and offer reassurance.

When you arrive to pick up your pet, we will explain our aftercare instructions, including a customized plan for pain management. We will also go over why E-collars are essential, how to use the collar and other important information for after care.

E-collars (Elizabethan collars/recovery collars)  are used after surgeries to prevent pets from licking, biting, or scratching surgical sites, which is crucial for avoiding infection, ensuring proper healing, and preventing complications like dislodged stitches or further injury. These collars act as a physical barrier, protecting wounds or incisions during the sensitive post-operative recovery period. We do not provide recovery collars, so please have your pet fitted for one at a pet store one week prior to the scheduled surgery.

Why E-collars are Essential

  • Prevent Licking and Chewing
  • Avoid Infections
  • Protect Incisions and Stitches
  • Ensure Proper Healing
  • Protect Topical Medications

Important Considerations

  • Temporary Necessity
  • Correct Fit and Type
  • Adjusting to the Collar
  • Duration of Use

Surgery doesn’t have to be a source of anxiety, especially if you’ve got the experienced, compassionate team at Sibley Animal Hospital in your corner. Contact us today and let’s discuss how we can help with all of your pet’s surgical care needs.
