Pet Names

July 15 2022

Did you know Max is the best male dog name of 2021? We love seeing the cute and fun names people come up with for their animal companions. It turns out that some recent studies have revealed some pretty interesting statistics about animal names. A local vet offers some highlights on pet names below.

Top Dog

As mentioned above, Max is the number one boy name for puppies. Other top scorers include Charlie, Milo, Buddy, Rocky, Bear, Leo and Teddy. For the girls, it’s Bella first, followed by Luna, Lucy, Daisy, Zoe, Lily, Lola, Baily and Stella.

Cat-egory

For our feline friends, the most popular girl names are Luna, Bella, Lily, Lucy, Nala, and Kitty. For the boys, Oliver, Leo, Milo, Charlie, Max and Simba are the best choices.

Medieval Pets

Edward, Duke of York, wrote a list of 1,100 hound names. Some, like Sturdy, Troy, Whitefoot, Hardy and Bo, don’t seem out of place today. Then we have Clenche, Bragge, Nosewise, Amiable and Filthe, which will probably make you raise your eyebrows!

As for our feline friends? We all know that Fluffy has been bossing people around for thousands of years. Turns out most kittens were named Gilbert in Medieval England. On the other side of the Channel, cats often respond to TIbers or Tiberts.

Celebrity Pet Names

The trend of naming pets after celebrities is probably not going away anytime soon! Both the names Taylor and Taylor Swift will become popular in 2021. Pets named after Jennifer Lopez, Aretha Franklin and A-Rod join the list for the first time, along with the cat Doja Cat. And while we’ve been seeing kittens named Oprah for a while, it’s worth noting that those numbers have increased over the past year.

Historical Pets

The unfortunate Anne Boleyn has a dog named Purkoy, which translation of the French “pour quoi”, which means “why?”. One of the oldest records of pet names is attributed to a 14th-century knight who had a dog named Parceval!

Choosing a Name

Choosing the right name for a pet can be quite complicated. Sometimes you can come up with the perfect name, but find it doesn’t suit your fluffy friend. A baby name generator can be helpful, but you can also try looking for translations of words that remind you of your pet’s personality, history, or appearance.
