Sibley Fido’s Year In Review

January 15 2022

Hope you’re having a happy New Year! Over the next few weeks, you’ll likely come across lots of best-of lists for 2021. Of course, no annual recap would be complete without Man’s Best Friend! In this post, a vet lists some top doggy highlights of 2021.

The Name Game

Covid-related dog names, as Fauci, Pfizer, and Zoom were quite popular in 2021’s analysis of popular pet names. High-tech names, such as Google and Siri, were also on the rise.

Fido Got A Stick Library

There were a lot of wagging tails in New Zealand this year. A man named Andrew Taylor made a stick library by chopping some branches off his own trees for the local pups after noticing a dire lack of sticks in the area.

Stress

Does background noise grate on your nerves? It does for your dog, too! University of California researchers found that common household noises, such as microwaves beeping, can stress Fido out. The most upsetting were high frequency sounds, like smoke alarms. (We’re with you on that one, buddy.)

If The Slipper Fits

A Yorkie named Digger truly exemplifies how cute senior dogs are. He was brought to a shelter after his owner passed away … along with an old slipper he just wouldn’t give up. The pooch and the slipper were adopted together.

Fido Lost Whamageddon … On Purpose

A real survey of 1000 pups was done by researchers in Britain. The goal? Identifying Fido’s favorite holiday tune. Wham’s love-it-or-hate-it hit Last Christmas turned out to be the winner. Jingle Bells and Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You took second and third place, respectively.

A Very Good Boy

We hear some remarkable stories about dogs that have gone above and beyond to help their humans, sometimes saving their lives. That’s exactly what happened with Henry, an 8-year- old Boston Terrier from Connecticut. Good ole Henry alerted his owners to their infant daughter, who had trouble breathing. This very good boy is credited with saving the baby’s life.

Mystery Solved

An interesting discovery in 2021 shed some light on the genetics that affect dogs’ coat patterns. A gene that produces very pale coats was discovered to be over two million years old. It originated with one of Fido’s now-extinct ancestors, a relative of the modern wolf.
