Cat Care Tips for the Summer Heat

August 1 2022

Summers are getting warmer, and so are our pets. But how do cats stay cool in hot weather? Read on as a vet offers some great tips to keep your feline friend safe and comfortable during the sweltering summer months.

The Dangers of Summer for Cats

Summer is a great time to spend outdoors. Your cat probably loves the sun and warmth as much as you do. But there are also some dangers you need to be aware of when your pet is outside in the summer heat.

Allergies and Skin Problems

Cats can develop skin problems from hot weather, especially if they get wet and dry too quickly. This is more likely if they spend a lot of time outdoors, but it can also happen indoors if there is humidity or lack of air conditioning in your home. Heat waves can also cause allergies in cats, making them itchy and uncomfortable during peak summer heat.

Heatstroke

Cats left outdoors for long periods of time without shade or water are more susceptible to heatstroke in hot weather. If your cat spends most of his time outdoors, it’s a good idea to check him regularly when temperatures reach 95 degrees Fahrenheit or higher (36 degrees Celsius). Make sure there is enough shade for him and provide water at all times so that he doesn’t become dehydrated when playing outside in the hot sun.

How to Keep Cats Cool in the Summer

  • Make sure your cat always has access to fresh water. You may want to provide multiple water sources in case one runs dry or overflows. If you keep your cat outdoors, consider using a water bowl with a low center of gravity so it stays upright if your cat bumps into it. 
  • Close windows when you’re away so your cat doesn’t overheat or lose water from radiant heat from window sills and doors. This is especially important for indoor cats, who may get confused about when it’s safe for them to come back in after playing outside all day! If you keep your cat outside, make sure it can’t get through a window opening and escape. Kittens, in particular, can squeeze through very small spaces!
  • If possible, try to avoid taking your cat out in the hot sun – this includes walking around the block as well as driving in a car where there is no air conditioning.
