Acupuncture In Pets

November 1 2021

Did you know that acupuncture is becoming very popular in the world of veterinary medicine? This ancient practice has been around for thousands of years, so it has certainly stood the test of time. This is one service that we are delighted to be able to offer our furry clients. Read on as a Calumet City, IL veterinarian discusses acupuncture in pets.

Basics

Acupuncture works the same way for pets as it does for people. The practice, as you probably know, is based on the use of very thin needles. These are inserted into pets’ bodies at specific points. The traditional Chinese belief is that the needles manipulate the flow of energy, or Qi, through the body, just as wires and electrical outlets divert and control electricity’s path through a building. Western medicine looks at it a little differently, instead noting that the specific acupuncture points are nerve centers. The stimulation to these centers causes several reactions, including the release of natural healing and painkilling hormones, as well as better circulation.

Uses

Acupuncture can be used to treat many different medical issues in our furry friends. The most common one is likely arthritis. Some of the other ones include gastrointestinal issues, fatigue, and respiratory problems, to name just a few.

Benefits

We know, the thought of inserting needles into a pet’s skin may sound a bit risky. However, acupuncture is painless. Some pets even fall asleep during their sessions! Another great benefit of acupuncture is the fact that the treatments don’t require the use of medicine or anesthesia. Your furry pal also won’t need to be kept overnight, unless special circumstances warrant it. Plus, treatments can be repeated as often as needed, until maximum benefits have been reached. Convenience is another bonus. Most acupuncture appointments last under half an hour, which makes them quite easy and convenient to schedule. Last but certainly not least, there are no known side effects or medical risks.

Tips

Acupuncture is wonderful, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best option for every pet. We always (and only) offer specific treatment options on a case-by-case basis, after a diagnosis has been made. That said, it never hurts to learn more! Ask your vet for more information.
